Bruins clip Canadiens

After a scoreless first period on Wednesday evening, the West End Bruins jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held on for a 3-2 win over the Fort William Canadiens.

Nicholas Silvaggio fired home the opening goal from the slot area 5:51 into the second period. Less than four minutes later, Chase Macsemchuk converted on a shorthanded rush to make it 2-0.

Early in the third period, Carter Tenhunen made it 3-0 but the Canadiens responded 25 seconds later, with Joseph Joubert netting his 17th of the season, finishing a set-up from Mason Arthur.

With just under five minutes remaining, Arthur buried a rebound from a Joubert shot to make it 3-2. It was Arthur’s fourth of the year.

With just under two minutes remaining and an extra attacker on the ice, the Canadiens had the majority of the puck possession but were unable to find the tying goal.

Notes: The Canadiens were 0-2 on the powerplay and did not receive a penalty in the game; Owen Renn was out of the lineup for the Canadiens; In the late game, the Volunteer Pool Bearcats defeated the Fort William Hurricanes 3-1; The Canadiens and Bearcats meet in the Monday night showcase game next week at the Fort William Gardens.

In a game that had eleven combined goals on Monday evening, the Fort William Hurricanes scored a 7-4 win over the Fort William Canadiens.

The Hurricanes jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with goals by Cayden Pike and Zachary Erickson. Neelix Otway cut the lead in half when his solo effort was rewarded, burying a second opportunity for his sixth of the season. The Hurricanes regained a two goal lead with a late first period marker by Lucas Dupuis.

After a scoreless first half of the second period, the two teams combined for five goals in a 6:12 span. Bryce Volbracht and Anthony Sgambelluri both scored before Mason Arthur converted an Otway pass for his third of the season.

Just over a minute later, Luca Jedruch converted a Joseph Joubert pass and slid home his 14th of the year.

Late in the middle period, Joubert was awarded a goal when his pressure on a delayed penalty eventually was rewarded with the puck sliding into an empty net to shrink the lead to 5-4. It was Joubert’s 16th of the season.

The Hurricanes closed the scoring with Liam Lucas and Dupuis goals.

The Fort William Canadiens made their 2024 debut on Wednesday evening, shutting out the Current River Comets 1-0.

After a scoreless first period, the Canadiens would score the lone goal early in the second period. Owen Renn won a faceoff back to Graham Gunn, with Gunn finding Tallon Thornsteinson along the board, and Thornsteinson’s shot beat the Comets’ netminder with a screen provided by Andrew Bragnalo.

Connor Menard would keep the Comets off the board for the remainder of the game, earning the win in net.

Canadiens end 2023 with loss

A slow start put the Fort William Canadiens behind early and the West End Bruins eventually cruised to a 7-1 win on Wednesday evening, the Canadiens final game of 2023.

Just 43 seconds into the game, the Bruins’ Isaac Magill banked home a goal to take an early lead. Late in the first period, Carter Tenhunen made it 2-0 with a powerplay goal.

The Bruins’ Boston Bortolin and Nicholas Silvaggio would both score on two on one breaks in the second period.

Andrew Bragnalo got the Canadiens on the board early in the third period, stealing a puck and backhanding home his fourth of the season.

Just over a minute later, the Bruins’ Kehl Thompson tipped home a point shot off a faceoff win. Bortolin would score midway through the period, banking a shot in off a Canadiens defender followed by another Silvaggio goal.

Notes: The Bruins were 1-3 on the powerplay while the Canadiens did not have a powerplay opportunity; Cole Rzeszut and Aiden Gregor were out of the lineup on Wednesday evening; With only two games scheduled next week in the AA division, the Canadiens have two weeks until their next game; In the late game, the Fort William Hurricanes defeated the Volunteer Pool Bearcats 5-3.

Herks drop Canadiens

The Fort William Hurricanes were able to take advantage of a couple early scoring opportunities to grab an early lead and then held the Fort William Canadiens off the scoresheet until the third period for a 5-1 win.

Just under five minutes into the game, Liam Lucas was able to score on a two on one rush to open the scoring. Less than a minute later, Lucas cut through the middle of the Canadiens’ defensive zone and snapped home a goal for a 2-0 lead.

Late in the first period, Levi Lucas pounced on a rebound to make it 3-0.

The lone goal of the second period was a powerplay marker by the Hurricanes’ Mathew Smelow.

The Canadiens finally got on the board in the opening minute of the third period, as Joseph Joubert fired home his 15th of the season after Nathan Caputo found him in the slot area.

Less than ten seconds later, the Canadiens were close to cutting the lead to two goals but were unable to get the puck across the goal line.

Smelow scored on a rebound to close the scoring.

Notes: The Hurricanes scored on their powerplay opportunity while the Canadiens were unable to convert on their lone chance; The Canadiens were without Deacon Panacheese; In the early game, the Current River Comets defeated the Volunteer Pool Bearcats; The Canadiens and West End Bruins square off on Wednesday evening.
