The Fort William Canadiens squared off with the hometown Marathon Northern Selects for the Superior Showdown title on Sunday afternoon, with the Canadiens grabbing a three goal lead and holding on for a 3-2 win.

Luca Jedruch opened the scoring just 1:52 into the game, snapping home his 17th of the season.

In the latter portion of the first period, Andrew Bragnalo jumped on a rebound from an Aiden Gregor point shot and outwaited the netminder to net his eighth of the campaign.

Midway through the second period, Tallon Thornsteinson dished a pass to Andrew Bragnalo, who found Mason Arthur in the slot area, with Arthur firing home his sixth goal of the year.

The Canadiens continued to push to find the elusive fourth goal but it was the Selects’ Giorgio Figliomeni would score with just 3:15 left in the game to give hometown team late hope.

Figliomeni would then bang home a powerplay goal, with the empty net give the Selects a two-man advantage, to make it 3-2 with one minute remaining.

Despite multiple opportunities in the final minute, the Canadiens would hold on for the one-goal victory to claim the Superior Showdown championship.

Connor Menard earned the win in net.

Notes: The Canadiens were 0-2 on the powerplay while the Selects scored on one of their two opportunities; Graham Gunn and Owen Renn remained out of the Canadiens lineup; The Canadiens return to regular season action on Monday night.

Down 3-0 early in the third period, the Fort William Canadiens didn’t quit and continued to push and eventually would grab a 4-3 shootout win to defeat the Sault Ste. Marie Jr. Greyhounds in the first semifinal of the Superior Showdown.

Just five minutes into the game, the Greyhounds found the puck in a goal crease scramble and Caleb Walker netted the first goal of the game.

The two teams would go almost 23 minutes without a goal until Logan Dearing would make it 2-0, jumping on a bouncing puck on an odd-man rush.

Four minutes into the third period, the Greyhounds’ Tyler Quenneville netted a powerplay marker to extend the lead to 3-0.

A minute later, Mason Arthur scored his fifth of the season on a powerplay to close the gap to 3-1.

With 80 seconds left in the game, Luca Jedruch fired home his 16th of the season to shrink the lead to a single goal.

As the final moments of the game were nearing, Joseph Joubert took the puck the length of the ice and Neelix Otway would jump on a loose puck and bury his 11th of the year to tie the game with 33 seconds left in the third period.

After five minutes of three-on-three action in which the Canadiens had the majority of the scoring opportunities, the game would head to a shootout.

The Greyhounds would score the on their second shootout opportunity but Neelix Otway would even the score on the next shot. After five shooters, the shootout was tied at 1-1 and headed to sudden death. Mason Arthur would score for the Canadiens in the sixth round and Nicolas Pavletic sealed the deal with a save on the Greyhounds final opportunity.

Notes: The Canadiens were 1-4 on the powerplay while the Greyhounds were 1-6; The Canadiens have now won 2 of 3 shootouts this season; Graham Gunn and Owen Renn were out of the lineup for the Canadiens; In the second semifinal, the Marathon Northern Selects eliminated the Wawa Legionnaires 4-2.

The Fort William Canadiens finished the round robin in the Superior Showdown with a scoreless tie and a 5-1 loss.

In the morning game, despite out chancing their opponent, the Fort William Canadiens finished with a 0-0 tie with the Wawa Legionnaires.

Nicolas Pavletic picked up the shutout in net.

In the evening game versus the hometown Marathon Northern Selects, the Canadiens fell 5-1.

Neelix Otway opened the scoring, potting a rebound for his 10th of the season in the first period. Marathon would tie it minutes later and the two teams would head to the first intermission tied 1-1.

The Selects scored twice in the latter portion of the second period to grab a 3-1 lead and would eventually add two more goals in the third period.

Notes: The Canadiens finished 0-8 on the powerplay on the day and killed all five shorthanded opportunities; Graham Gunn and Owen Renn missed both games, while Joseph Joubert returned to the lineup for the second game of the day; The Canadiens will meet the Sault Ste. Marie Jr. Greyhounds in the first semifinal while Marathon and Wawa will meet in the latter semifinal game.

In a tightly contested game in the Superior Showdown, the Sault Ste. Marie Jr. Greyhounds netted a pair of powerplay goals to defeat the Fort William Canadiens 4-1.

After a scoreless first period, the Greyhounds scored in the later part of the second period with a Riley Carter powerplay goal.

With just 4:44 left in the game, the Greyhounds made it 2-0 when Brody Kleist scored a powerplay marker.

The Canadiens cut the lead in half, with Andrew Bragnalo taking a drop pass from Mason Arthur and snapped home his seventh of the season with 39 seconds left in the game.

The Greyhounds would score an empty net goal 11 seconds later and then finish the scoring with a fourth goal 13 seconds later.

Notes: The Greyhounds were 2-4 on the powerplay while the Canadiens were 0-3; Graham Gunn and Joseph Joubert were out of the Canadiens lineup and Owen Renn was lost for the game early in the first period; In the early game, the Marathon Northern Selects defeated the Wawa Legionnaires 5-4; The Canadiens meet the Legionnaires and Selects on Saturday.

Bruins blank Canadiens

The West End Bruins scored three times in the first period and added a third period marker to shutout the Fort William Canadiens 4-0.

About four minutes into the game, Nicholas Silvaggio cut to the net and opened the scoring.

Silvaggio would set Ethan Hamilton in the slot area midway through the period to make it 2-0 and Silvaggio added his second of the period minutes later to make it 3-0.

After a scoreless second period, the Bruins’ Boston Bortolin would fire home a goal in the opening minute of the third period off a faceoff win.

Notes: Neither team had a powerplay opportunity; Deacon Panacheese and Joseph Joubert were out of the Canadiens lineup; In the early game, the Fort William Hurricanes defeated the Volunteer Pool Bearcats 3-1; The Canadiens will compete in the Superior Showdown this upcoming weekend, opening the tournament with a meeting with the Sault Ste. Marie Jr. Greyhounds on Friday evening.
