Canadiens and Comets tie

Posted by Lincoln Galbraith at Nov 16, 2004 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
The Fort William Canadiens and Current River Comets battled to a 2-2 tie on Tuesday night.  This was the second consecutive tie for th Canadiens, who are now undefeated in five games.

The Canadiens got out to a quick start when Cosimo Racco took a Terry Zaroski pass to pot his third goal of the season.  Zaroski was then credited with his sixth goal, when a Brad McLean shot was deflected on the powerplay midway through the first period.

The Comets than took advantage of a whistle for an unknown reason.  Jerry Franzese was firing a puck home when the whistle went.  With no reason for the whistle, the faceoff was moved to centre ice, where Current River went down the ice and Kyle Hakanen potted a rebound past Canadiens goalie Cody Junttola.

After numerous penalties and powerplays for both teams, the Comets were able to score a goal with 53 seconds left in the game, when Hakanen scored on a loose puck in the crease with the goaltender pulled and on a powerplay.

In a seldom used rule, the Fort William Canadiens were awarded a penalty shot with five seconds remaining.  The penalty shot was awarded due to a delay of game call called with less than two minutes remaining because the Comets had knocked the net off intentionally.  Chris Kovac took the shot but the puck rolled off his stick after deking the goalie.

In the end, Current River finished with 44 minutes in penalties while the Canadiens had 24 minutes.  Both teams were 1-6 on the powerplay.

Notes: Volunteer Pool Bearcats defeated the Fort William Hurricanes 7-4 for their first win of the season; Brandon Hyatt again sat out with an arm injury, with the arm to receive a bone scan next Tuesday; Drew Strandberg sat out the game as he was competing in the highschool volleyball championships; Sean Spenrath will sit out Thursday's game, as he will be away competing in a running championships; Prior to the game, the captains of the Canadiens were announced.  Terry Zaroski was named captain, while Kevin Connolly, Justin Backor and Sean Spenrath were all named assistant captains.  The captains were voted on by the team.

The Coaches and Management woke up on Monday November 1, 2004 and found the team webpage gone.  Apparently, Allcanadiansport.ca ceased operations without notifying the webusers.  We apologize for the delay in restarting the new webpage.  We hope you enjoy the new format, with the added features of a calendar, guestbook, and roster page.  Most, if not all, pages are printer friendly.  If you have any questions or comments, please contact Lincoln Galbraith.

Canadiens battle to 1-1 tie

Posted by Lincoln Galbraith at Nov 9, 2004 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
In a game that will likely be one of, if not the lowest, scoring games of the season in the Midget 'AA' loop, the Fort William Canadiens (3-2-1) battled to a 1-1 draw with the West End Bruins (3-1-2).

Unlike the last time these two teams met, in which the Bruins jumped out to a 4-0 lead, the Canadiens got off to a quick start when Terry Zaroski jumped on a loose puck in front of the net and slid it under the prone Mathew Morin. It was Zaroski's fifth goal in his first four games this season. The two teams battled for 26 scoreless minutes until Cory Fortier banged home a rebound off a point shot past Cody Junttola with 12:46 on the clock in the third. Both teams had many scoring opportunities throughout the game but the goaltenders were equal to the task.

The Canadiens powerplay went 0-6 on the night, while the Bruins were 0-2.

Notes: Brendon Hyatt sat out his sixth consecutive game with an arm injury, his return date is still unknown; The Bruins played without two suspended players, Taylor Riley and Tim Stark; Current River Comets (4-2-1) tied the Volunteer Pool Bearcats (0-4-1) Tuesday evening; the Fort William Hurricanes are 3-1-1

For the second time this season, the Fort William Canadiens fell to the Norwest Stars juvenile team 5-2.  The Canadiens (6-9-3) sit in fourth place among the Midget 'AA' teams, 4 points ahead of the idle Volunteer Pool Bearcats.

The Canadiens fell behind early, with Norwest scoring two first period powerplay goals.  Derek Wark and Kyle Oikonen were the goal scorers.

After Willie Mitchell made it 3-0, Chris Kovac scored on a breakaway to make it 3-1 at the second intermission.  It was Kovac's 11th of the season and ninth point in the past six games.

The Canadiens made it 3-2 when Brad McLean's point shot on the powerplay found the back of the net for his first of the season.  Micheal Dawd then scored two consecutive goals to finish the game for Norwest.

The Canadiens finished the night 1-3 on the powerplay while Norwest was 2-3.

Drew Strandberg took the loss while Jesse Fisher snagged the win.

Notes: The Canadiens played without Jordan Buckley (second game of two game suspension) and Jesse Friday; Kovac's point streak is the second longest of the season behind Terry Zaroski's streak of 11 points (9G, 2A) in eight games; The Canadiens play the Fort William Hurricanes on Tuesday and then have their final meeting of the year with the Norwest Stars on Thursday.
