The Fort William Canadiens dropped their final game of the Gopher State Classic 6-1 on Monday afternoon.

The Sabercats scored three first period goals to take control of the game.

After the Sabercats scored two early goals in the second period, the Canadiens finally got on the board, with Neelix Otway converting on a two on none break with Joseph Joubert for his 14th of the season.

The Sabercats added a late second period goal to end the scoring.

Notes: The Canadiens didn’t score on their one powerplay opportunity while the Sabercats were 1-3 on the powerplay; Ewan Reid, Deacon Panacheese, Owen Renn and Nathan Caputo were all of the Canadiens’ lineup for the game; The Fort William Hurricanes defeated the West End Bruins 3-2 in the championship final.

The Fort William Canadiens dropped a pair of games on day two of the Gopher State Classic, falling 4-2 to the Fort William Hurricanes and 3-0 to the West End Bruins.

In the opener, played on the outdoor ice surface, the Hurricanes’ Brady Smith scored the opening goal midway through the first period.

Joseph Joubert scored his 19th of the season, beating the Hurricanes’ defender wide and tied the game at 1-1 early in the second period.

After the Hurricanes’ Smith scored a second goal, Andrew Bragnalo tipped home a Deacon Panacheese shot for his 10th of the year to even the score at 2-2 heading to the third period.

The Hurricanes’ Anthony Sgambelluri scored early in the third period and Bryce Volbracht ended the scoring in the final minute of play.

In the late game, with the winner likely heading on to the finals, the West End Bruins shutout the Canadiens 3-0.

After a scoreless first period, the Bruins’ Nicholas Silvaggio and Cruz Halstead scored second period markers to take a 2-0 lead.

Silvaggio ended the scoring midway through the third period with a powerplay goal.

Notes: The Canadiens didn’t have a powerplay opportunity in either game; The Canadiens killed off 2 of 3 penalties on the day; Owen Renn and Nathan Caputo did not play in either game; Cole Rzeszut hit the 100-game milestone in the second game of the day; The Canadiens and San Francisco Sabercats will meet on Monday to battle for third place.

Neelix Otway scored twice, including the game winner, in his 100th career game with the Fort William Canadiens as the Canadiens slipped past the San Francisco Sabercats 3-2 to open the Gopher State Classic in St. Louis Park.

Late in the first period, the Canadiens’ Owen Bodnar fired a shot on goal and Luca Jedruch jumped on the rebound to score his 19th of the season and give the Canadiens a first period lead.

After the Sabercats’ Damien Paschke tied the game with the lone goal of the second period, Otway would score in the opening minutes of the third period to regain the one-goal lead.

Otway would score his second of the night and 13th of the season with just over three minutes left in the game to extend the lead to two goals.

The Sabercats’ Hunter Inkster would score a late shorthanded goal to close the gap to 3-2 but neither team was able to score again.

Connor Menard earned the win in net.

Notes: The Canadiens were 0-3 on the powerplay but killed all four shorthanded opportunities; Owen Renn and Nathan Caputo were out of the Canadiens lineup; Deacon Panacheese finished with two assists; Otway is the active leader in games played with 100, followed by Cole Rzeszut (98), Joseph Joubert (94), Luca Jedruch (90), Ewan Reid (87) and Nicolas Pavletic (79); The Canadiens square off with the Fort William Hurricanes on Sunday morning in the outdoor game, followed by a late afternoon game with the West End Bruins.

Bearcats blank Canadiens

On Monday evening, the Volunteer Pool Bearcats shutout the Fort William Canadiens 3-0.

Midway through the first period, Daniel Lombardo skated down the left wing and fired home the opening goal.

The Bearcats got three straight powerplay opportunities in the middle of the second period and took advantage of the latter two, with Fisher Smith and Lombardo both scoring with the extra skater to give the Bearcats a 3-0.

The third period was scoreless.

Notes: The Canadiens were 0-3 on the powerplay while the Bearcats were 2-4; Deacan Panacheese, Owen Renn and Connor Menard were out of the Canadiens lineup; In the late game, the Current River Comets defeated the West End Bruins 3-0; The Canadiens next action is on Saturday evening in St. Louis Park.

Late goal sinks Canadiens

The Fort William Hurricanes scored with just 1:58 remaining in the game to break a 2-2 tie and eventually defeat the Fort William Canadiens 4-2.

The Hurricanes scored the lone goal of the first period as Chase Graver jumped on a scrambled puck off a faceoff and fired home the marker in the final minute of the period.

Andrew Bragnalo evened the score at 1-1 with his ninth of the year, converting a Joseph Joubert pass on a two on one break.

The Hurricanes regained the lead a minute later on a Brady Wrigley goal.

Just 18 seconds into the third period, Luca Jedruch scored to tie the game at 2-2, firing home a bad angle shot for his 18th of the season.

After playing almost 13 minutes without a goal, a Levi Lucas screenshot found it’s way through to make it 3-2. Bryce Volbracht ended the scoring less than a minute later.

Notes: The Canadiens’ powerplay was 0-2 while the Hurricanes were 0-1 with the extra skater; Owen Renn and Mason Arthur were out of the Canadiens lineup; In the early game, the Volunteer Pool Bearcats and West End Bruins tied 1-1; The Canadiens return to the ice Friday evening, hosting the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints from Kenora.
