Comets clip Canadiens

For the third straight regular season game, the Fort William Canadiens fell by a single goal, dropping a 4-3 game to the Current River Comets on Monday evening.

The Comets’ Nathan Vita opened the scoring, getting body position in the crease area. Late in the first period, Connor Brindley tipped a powerplay point shot to make it 2-0.

Early in the second period, Luca Jedruch found a wide open Andrew Bragnalo in the slot area, with Bragnalo burying it to cut the lead in half. Jedruch would score his 15th of the year late in the frame, winning a race for the puck and backhanding home the tying goal.

Just 2:15 into the third period, Vita would score his second of the game, followed by a Koen Herman goal 48 seconds later.

Bragnalo would net his second of the game and sixth of the season with 5:20 remaining in the game, a shorthanded goal to close the gap to 4-3.

Despite a late powerplay chance and an extra attacker, the Canadiens were unable to find the tying goal.

Notes: The Canadiens ended the night 0-3 on the powerplay; The Comets scored an early powerplay goal but were held off for a late major penalty to finish 1-2 on the powerplay; Owen Bodnar, Tallon Thornsteinson and Nathan Caputo were out of the lineup for the Canadiens; Ali Hassan Alam played his first regular season game with the Canadiens, his eighth total game this season; In the early game, the Fort William Hurricanes defeated the West End Bruins; The Canadiens have nine days off between game for the exam season, returning to play on Wednesday January 31st versus the West End Bruins.

The Fort William Canadiens dropped their final round robin games of the Robin’s Minor Hockey Classic, falling 5-3 to the Marathon Northern Selects.

The Selects scored five times by the end of the first period, with three of those goals in the final 3:30 of play.

Midway through the second period the Canadiens’ Neelix Otway scored a powerplay marker, converting a Deacon Panacheese pass, to get his team on the board. It was Otway’s ninth of the season.

Joseph Joubert scored a powerplay goal, his 18th of the year, less than four minutes later to close the gap to 5-2.

Tallon Thornsteinson converted an Aiden Gregor pass to shrink the gap to two goals but a scoreless third period would leave the score at 5-3. The goal was Thornsteinson’s eighth of the campaign.

Notes: The Canadiens were 2-6 on the powerplay while were able to kill all three shorthanded opportunities; Luca Jedruch, Owen Renn, Andrew Bragnalo and Nathan Caputo were out of the Canadiens lineup; Ali Hassan Alam played his fourth game of the weekend for the Canadiens; The semifinals include three of the four teams that the Canadiens played in the round robin, with Fort William Hurricanes meeting the Marathon Northern Selects while the West End Bruins and Interlake Lightning squaring off in the other semifinal.

The Fort William Canadiens dropped a pair of closely contested games on day two of the Robin’s Minor Hockey Classic, dropping 1-0 and 2-0 games.

In the opener, the Interlake Lightning scored the lone goal of the game late in the second period with the Lightning swatting a puck into the net.

In the late game, the Volunteer Pool Bearcats scored late in the first period and ended the scoring with an empty net goal with 14 seconds left in the game.

Notes: The Canadiens were without Luca Jedruch and Andrew Bragnalo for both games and also were missing Deacon Panacheese and Nathan Caputo in the early game; Ali Hassan Alam played both games for the Canadiens; The Canadiens were 0-3 on the day while killing all five shorthanded chances; The Canadiens will complete the round robin on Saturday afternoon, playing the Marathon Selects.

The Fort William Hurricanes scored twice in a 17 second span in the first period and shutdown the Fort William Canadiens 4-0 in the opening game of the Robin’s Minor Hockey Classic.

At the 4:43 mark, the Hurricanes forward spun and fired home the opening goal on a two on two rush, followed by a Nolen Sloan goal off a goal mouth scramble 17 seconds later.

The teams would play almost 22 consecutive minutes without a goal until the Hurricanes’ Sloan beat the Canadiens defender and backhanded home the Hurricanes’ third goal.

Midway through the third period, the Hurricanes’ Zachary Erickson ended the scoring.

Notes: The Canadiens killed their only penalty but were 0-4 on the powerplay; The Canadiens were without Deacon Panacheese, Luca Jedruch and Mason Arthur and lost Andrew Bragnalo part way through the game; Ali Hassan Alam played his fourth game as an affiliate for the Canadiens; The Canadiens meet the Interlake Lightning and the Volunteer Pool Bearcats on Friday.

The Fort William Canadiens had their opportunity to play in the annual showcase game on Monday night, but the Volunteer Pool Bearcats came from behind to grab a 5-4 victory.

Neelix Otway got the Canadiens on the board with a pair of first period goals less than two minutes apart. The opening goal was a rebound off a Joseph Joubert shot while the latter goal was a conversion of a Kieran Lemmetty pass to the slot area, giving Otway his eighth of the season.

The Bearcats scored in the late part of the first period with a Joshua Badanai marker.

Early in the second period, Tallon Thornsteinson potted a rebound off an Andrew Bragnalo shot to extend the lead to 3-1.

Badanai would score on a rush followed by a Carson Bagley shot that was deflected to even the score at 3-3 heading into the intermission break.

Kaelen Edwards scored on a two on none break followed by a Bagley goal 61 seconds later to give the Bearcats a 5-3 lead.

Thornsteinson netted his second of the game and seventh of the year with 56 seconds remaining to close the gap to one goal but the Canadiens were unable to find the tying goal.

Notes: The Bearcats were 0-2 on the powerplay while the Canadiens did not have a powerplay opportunity; Lemmetty finished the game with three assists; With the Bearcats winning three straight, they have closed the gap between the Canadiens and Bearcats to two points; The Canadiens next games will be part of the Robin’s Minor Hockey Classic beginning on Thursday evening.
