Spenrath sparks Canadiens win

Posted by Lincoln Galbraith at Feb 8, 2005 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

Sean Spenrath scored four times to lead the Canadiens to a 6-4 win over the Fort William Hurricanes.

The Canadiens fell behind early when David Renzi walked out from the corner and beat Drew Strandberg.  The Canadiens replied just a minute later when Brandon Hyatt hit Chris Kovac with a pass giving Kovac a partial breakaway in which he beat Hurricanes goaltender Jeff Stokes.  It was Kovac's 19th of the season.  Sean Spenrath scored a goal off a goal crease scramble late in the first period.

Justin Backor made it 3-1 when he took a pass from Hyatt on a 2-1 break and beat the Hurricanes goaltender.  It was Backor's 11th of the season.  The Hurricanes responded with two goals by Rylan Yawney to make it 3-3.  Sean Spenrath then scored two goals late in the period to make it 5-3 after two.

Sean Spenrath concluded his offensive night with his fourth goal of the night and 13th of the season when he received a pass from Terry Zaroski while playing 4 on 4 and beat Stokes over the shoulder.  Micheal Cowie scored late for the Hurricanes while they were shorthanded to make it 6-4.

Drew Strandberg earned the victory while Jeff Stokes took the loss.

The Canadiens were 0-3 on the powerplay while the Hurricanes were 1-2.

Notes: With the Volunteer Pool Bearcats win over the West End Bruins earlier in the night, the Canadiens now sit in third place with 25 points, just one point behind both the Bruins and Hurricanes.  The Bruins have one game in hand while the Hurricanes have two games in hand.  The Canadiens are also four points up on Current River (who has two games in hand) and 11 points up on the Bearcats (who have one game in hand); Besides Spenrath's four point night, Hyatt and Kovac each had three point nights and Jordan Buckley also had two points; The Canadiens are now 3-0-1 versus the Hurricanes in the regular season and 3-1-1 overall; The Canadiens have now won the season series versus the Hurricanes and Bruins giving them the all-important tie breaker versus those teams.  The head-to-head tiebreaker is the second tie-breaker, behind most wins; The Canadiens have just five games remaining in the regular season, with two of those games coming in the next week.

Canadiens close gap on teams above

Posted by Lincoln Galbraith at Feb 1, 2005 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
With a win over the West End Bruins on Tuesday night, the Canadiens closed the gap on teams above them in the standings.  The 4-2 victory moved the Canadiens past the Current River Comets by two points with the Comets having three games in hand.  The Canadiens also moved within three points of the Bruins and Fort William Hurricanes, who both lead the league.

The Bruins jumped out to a first period lead when Eric Hjorth scored midway through the first period.

The second period saw the Canadiens score the lone marker when Jerry Franzese took a puck in the slot and beat Mathew Moring over the glove shoulder.  It was Franzese's eighth of the year.

The Canadiens jumped out to a lead early in the third when Sean Spenrath stole a puck and beat Morin for his ninth of the season.  Five minutes later, Terry Zaroski was sent in on a breakaway when Morin attempted to beat him to the puck.  The result was a collision that sent the puck rolling into the net and Morin limping to the dressing room.  It was Zaroski's 22nd of the season. Justin Backor made it 4-1 when his wrap around snuck through the pads of Eric Wing.  It was Backor's 10th of the season.  Evan Stewart scored one late on the powerplay to close out the scoring.

Cody Junttola was solid in the net and earned the victory.

The Canadiens were 0-4 on the powerplay while the Bruins were 1-4.

Notes: The Canadiens played without Kyler Miron (illness) and Brad McLean (work); Alex Kranyak, from the Bantam 'AA' Norwest Stars made his debut last night; The earlier game saw the Hurricanes defeat the Volunteer Pool Bearcats; The Canadiens now have three plays in double-digits for goals (Zaroski, Chris Kovac, and Backor) with Spenrath at 9 and Franzese at 8; Ryan Krasnichuk has a season high four game assist streak going.  The previous high of three was reached by Miron, Kovac, Backor and Franzese.

Bruins end Canadiens hope

Posted by Lincoln Galbraith at Jan 30, 2005 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
With the Canadiens needing two more wins and some help from the Volunteer Pool Bearcats, the West End Bruins ended the hopes of the Canadiens with a 5-2 victory Saturday night.

Goal scorers for the Canadiens were Justin Backor and Chris Kovac.  The Canadiens fell apart late in the second period and were forced to attempt a comeback in the third, but to no avail.

The interesting part of the game is that had it been tied, with the Bruins also need a victory, both teams were going to pull their goalies in an attempt to win.  The two teams may have actually played 6 on 6 with no goalies at one point.

Canadiens conclude tourney

Posted by Lincoln Galbraith at Jan 30, 2005 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
With nothing on the line, the Canadiens defeated the Dryden Renegades 7-1.

Goal scorers for the Canadiens were Justin Backor and Sean Spenrath with two, along with singles from Brandon Hyatt, Jesse Friday, and Chris Kovac.

The game was delayed after the first period intermission while a replacement referee was found to replace an injured linesman, who actually was struck in the head with a puck the game before.  The linesman was taken to the hospital by ambulance with concussion like symptoms.

January in review

Posted by Lincoln Galbraith at Jan 30, 2005 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
The month of January had it's ups and downs for the Fort William Canadiens.  After starting with 8-5 and 5-2 losses to the Neebing Hawks and Norwest Stars respectively, the Canadiens reeled off three straight wins.  The Canadiens defeated the Fort William Hurricanes 4-2, the Stars 9-3, and the Bantam 'AAA' Kings 3-2.  The Thunder Bay Minor tournament saw the Canadiens go 2-3.

Overall, the Canadiens were 5-5-0 in the month, scoring 38 goals and giving up 35 goals.  Both figures were in excess of the normal goals per game averages the Canadiens had in previous months.  The special teams were a bit below the rest of the season but remained strong.  The powerplay was 18.8% while the penalty killing was 85.0%.  The month saw the Canadiens receive 254 penalty minutes, which equates to 25.4 minutes per game.  The Canadiens average 24.0 minutes per game to date.

Individually, Chris Kovac lead the team offensively with 15 points (11G, 4A) in the 10 games.  He was followed by Terry Zaroski at 13 points (8G, 5A) and Justin Backor at 12 points (5G, 7A).  Their goal totals also led the team for the month.  Backor and Jerry Franzese lead the team in assists with seven, followed by Sean Spenrath and Ryan Krasnichuk with six assists.  Plus-minus leaders for the month were: Chris Kovac (+6), Sean Spenrath (+5), Kevin Connolly (+5) and Ryan Krasnichuk (+5).  Drew Strandberg picked up three wins in the month while Cody Junttola picked up two wins.

The month of February will see the Canadiens play just four regular season games, with each one being very important in the playoff race.  The Canadiens will also travel to Chicago, Illinois for a tournament mid-month, with a minimum of four games to be played there.
