Canadiens return to win column

Posted by Lincoln Galbraith at Dec 21, 2004 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
The Canadiens took advantage of their opportunities last night and handed the West End Bruins just their fourth loss of the season 4-3.  The Canadiens improved to 5-7-3 while West End now sits at 6-4-4.

The first period was a scoreless frame.  Each team had few quality opportunities in the period.

The second period was an offensive explosion.  West End scored the first two goals of the period, with Tommy Langen and Randy Murray scoring in the first couple of minutes of the period.  Sean Spenrath responded, beating Mathew Morin over the glove on a breakaway.  Jesse Friday scored his first of the season with a shot from just inside the blueline.  Late in the third period, Ryan Krasnichuk took a shot from the point that was going wide when Terry Zaroski tipped it home, making it 3-2 at the second intermission.  It was Zaroski's 12th of the season.

The West End Bruins evened the score just 1:26 into the third period when Tommy Langen scored his second of the game.  The game was even for a 9 minute span until Chris Kovac wired a shot over the Bruins replacement goalie Eric Wing shoulder to make it 4-3.  It was Kovac's sixth of the season, fifth on the powerplay, and became his second game winning goal of the year.

The Canadiens were 1-5 on the powerplay while the Bruins were 0-3.

Cody Junttola battled hard for the win on Tuesday night, making some key saves in the third period to give the Canadiens a chance to win.  Eric Wing took the loss.

Notes: The Canadiens played without Jerry Franzese and Brad McLean;  The Canadiens next play Wednesday the 29th against Current River.  They will then have 13 days off and not play until January 11th;  Terry Zaroski and Chris Kovac both have five powerplay goals on the season.  That ties the single season high (since statistics have been kept by the coaching staff) and beats the old record of 4 in the regular season; The team now has 18 powerplay goals.  The record is 21 in a regular season and 29 overall.  The powerplay percentage of 24.0% is higher than the previous record of 16.8%; The penalty killing percentage of 85.7% is also higher than the previous reocrd of 78.9%; The Canadiens are now 2-0-3 when leading after the second period but just 1-6-0 when trailing after the second period; Eight different players registered points on Tuesday night.

Canadiens drop second in a row

Posted by Lincoln Galbraith at Dec 19, 2004 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
For the second straight game, the Canadiens came away without a point. The Volunteer Pool Bearcats outworked the Canadiens on their way to a 4-3 victory.

The Bearcats jumped out to an early lead, with former Canadien Ryan Beese scoring just over three minutes into the game. The Canadiens responded late in the first with two goals, the first by Jerry Franzese and the second by Terry Zaroksi.

Curtis Ward scored the lone goal of the second to even the score after two periods.

The Bearcats used a 1:21 span midway through the third period to jump out to a 4-2 lead. Ryan Sambray and Evan Matson scored the goals. The Canadiens, with the goalie pulled, were able to get within one goal when Terry Zaroski scored his 11th of the season.

The Canadiens have given up four important points in the past two games and they hit the half-way point of the season with a 4-7-3 record, just good enough for fourth place among the five Midget 'AA' teams. The Bearcats are two points back with just 13 games played.

Drew Strandberg took the loss and C.J. Racco earned the win.

The Canadiens were 0-3 on the powerplay while the Bearcats were 1-4.

Notes: The Canadiens, for just the second time this season, dressed a full roster of 17 players; The Bearcats were missing Stefano Lento; The Canadiens and Bearcats do not play each other until March 1;

Henderson sinks Canadiens

Posted by Lincoln Galbraith at Dec 14, 2004 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Zach Henderson of the Norwest Stars took advantage of every opportunity he got last night, scoring four goals in leading the Norwest Stars juvenile hockey team past the Fort William Canadiens 5-4.

Henderson got the Stars going early, one-timing a shot in the slot just 40 seconds into the game.  Sean Spenrath responded three minutes laters when he was sent in alone on a pass by Kyler Miron to score his fourth of the season.

The Norwest Stars jumped on the Canadiens midway through the second period when Henderson scored two goals just a minute and a half apart.  The first one was scored during a 4 on 4 opportunity while the second one was a powerplay marker with a delayed penalty making it 6 on 4.  A couple of minutes later, the Canadiens responded when Chris Kovac poked a puck through the crease to a wide-open Kyler Miron, who potted his third of the season.  Norwest responded a minute later and took a 4-2 lead into the third period.

The Canadiens Jerry Franzese finished a three way passing play with Spenrath and Cosimo Racco early in the third to make it 4-3.  Henderson then stole a puck while shorthanded and beat Cody Junttola on a breakaway, giving him four goals on the night, including a powerplay goal, a shorthanded goal, a 4 on 4 goal and a even strength goal.  The Canadiens closed the gap once again when Brendan Willis' shot deflected to the side of the net where Ryan Krasnichuk finished for his first of the season.

The Canadiens had many opportunities late in the game to make the comeback complete but were denied on munerous occasions by Jesse Fisher.  The Canadiens had a 6 on 4 opportunity for more than a minute late in the game but were unable to find a way to score.

While Cody Junttola got the loss, he made some big saves in the third to give the Canadiens a chance to comeback.

The Canadiens were 2-8 on the powerplay while Norwest was 1-6.

Notes:  With Justin Backor, Terry Zaroski and Jordan Buckley all sitting out the game with a suspension and Brandon Hyatt (Illness) absent, the Canadiens dressed just 12 skaters, which included Hayden Johnston from the Midget 'A' Canadiens.  Jerry Franzese was also battling an illness and was not 100%.  The Norwest Stars dressed 17 skaters; The early game Tuesday night saw Neebing defeat Current River in a heated, penalty filled 6-5 game;  Sean Spenrath and Cosimo Racco both have four points in the past two games.  Racco had three assists last night.  Spenrath (two assists), Miron (goal and assist) and Brendan Willis (two assists) all had multiple point games last night; The Canadiens face off with the Volunteer Pool Bearcats on Sunday, with the Bearcats trailing the Canadiens by four points with a game in hand; Current River and West End are both tied for first place, with the Hurricanes four points back and with three games in hand.

The Fort William Canadiens players are well represented on the affiliate lists of teams in the region. Sean Spenrath is an affiliate of the Midget 'AAA' Kings team while Chris Kovac, Drew Strandberg and Cody Junttola are affiliated with the Thunder Bay Minor Midget Kings. The K & A Wolverines (Junior B) affiliated with Kevin Connolly, Kyler Miron and Terry Zaroski. The Westfort Maroons drafted Justin Backor while the defending Junior B champion Northern Hawks affiliated with Cosimo Racco and Ryan Krasnichuk. The players born in 1989 were not available to be drafted to any junior affiliation lists, as ruled by Thunder Bay Minor Hockey Association. The Canadiens Midget 'AA' team has always encouraged the players to take advantage of any ice made available to them on these teams but remind the players that the Midget 'AA' team events must remain a priority. Also, any suspensions received at the higher level do carry over to the Midget 'AA' level by rule of Hockey Canada.

Canadiens battle to tie

Posted by Lincoln Galbraith at Dec 7, 2004 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
The Fort William Canadiens and Fort William Hurricanes battled to a 2-2 tie in a game that had playoff-type intensity.  With emotions running high, the teams made frequent trips to the penalty box and dressing room.

Cosimo Racco got the scoring started in the first period when his backhand beat Jeff Stokes over the right shoulder on the powerplay.  It was Racco's fifth goal of the season.  The period ended with the teams combining for 14 minutes in penalties.

The second period involved no scoring but a series of penalties, with the most severe incident occuring at the end of the period.  Six players were ejected from the game with fighting majors and Michael Cowie receiving an additional match penalty.  In all, the second period had 115 minutes in penalties.

The third period calmed down to a degree, with both teams having short benches.  Sean Spenrath scored part way through the third period to make it 2-0.  The Hurricanes had numerous opportunities turned away by Drew Strandberg before Jesse Demeo banged home a puck to make it 2-1 with just under four minutes remaining.  The Hurricanes then pulled their goalie and Jordan Foglia's point shot found the back of the net to even the score at 2-2.

In the end, the Canadiens and Hurricanes combined for 137 penalty minutes.

The Canadiens were 1-6 on the powerplay while the Hurricanes were 0-5.

Notes:  Brandon Hyatt made his season debut, returning from an arm injury.  He had missed the first 11 games of the season; Jordan Baraniuk (two assists) and Sean Spenrath (goal and assist) both had two points in the game.  Baraniuk played forward in the third period to give the Canadiens an additional player up front; Chris Kovac (game ejection for three stick infractions) and Kyler Miron (head injury) played just the first couple minutes of the third period.  The Canadiens finished the game with 5 regular forwards and 5 defenseman; Justin Backor, Jordan Buckley and Terry Zaroski received an automatic one-game suspension for their part in the second period incident.  The suspensions will be served when the Canadiens play Norwest on December 14th; West End beat the depleted Volunteer Pool Bearcats 5-3 prior to the Canadiens game.  The Bearcats had three players suspended for the game.
