Third place locked

Posted by Lincoln Galbraith at Mar 13, 2005 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Cosimo Racco and Ryan Krasnichuk scored 52 seconds apart to complete the come from behind vicotry over the Norwest Stars last night.  With the victory, the Canadiens clinched third place and will face the West End Bruins in the first round of the playoffs, beginning on Tuesday March 22.

The Norwest Stars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on goals from Mark Kmill and Joel Ritchie.

The second period saw a flurry of goals and penalties.  The Canadiens scored three consecutive goals in the third period on the powerplay.  Terry Zaroski took a loose puck from the side of the net and banged home his 26th of the season.  Two minutes later, Chris Kovac scored his 22nd of the season.  Justin Backor got his 14th of the season less than four minutes later to give the Canadiens a 3-2 lead.  The Norwest Stars took advantage of their powerplays, scoring two goals in 1:28.  Kurtis Malo and Doug Diebel scored the goals giving the Stars a 4-3 lead heading into the intermission.  The Canadiens would start the third period with a five minute powerplay following a checking from behind major assessed to Ritchie.

The third period began with the seven minutes of powerplay time in the first 7:45 of the period.  Just over a minute after the penalties ended, Racco fired a puck farside on Evan Markley to tie the game at 4-4.  It was Racco's 10th of the season.  Krasnichuk then jumped into the play and potted his second of the season, the eventual game winner.  Zaroski iced the game with an empty-netter.

Cody Junttola earned the win while Merkley took the loss.

The Canadiens were 3-7 on the powerplay while the Stars were 2-4.

Notes:  The Canadiens played without Sean Spenrath (injury), Jordan Baraniuk (injury), Brendan Willis (travel) and Jordan Buckley (travel).  Buckley and Willis are both away with their baseball team in Florida for March break; Hayden Johnston and Brad Vis both played for the Canadiens.  It was Johnston's fourth game and Vis's fifth game of the season; Brad McLean was given a fighting major mid-way through the second period, leaving the Canadiens with three defenseman, including Johnston, so Jesse Friday moved to the point for the second half of the game;  Drew Strandberg got his first Junior 'A' start on Sunday, losing 5-4 to the Dryden Ice Dogs on a goal in the last minute.  Strandberg was an emergency call-up for the K & A Golden Hawks of the SIJHL

Second place hopes disappear

Posted by Lincoln Galbraith at Mar 9, 2005 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

With a 2-1 loss to the Bantam 'AAA' Kings, the Fort William Canadiens no longer can catch the West End Bruins for second place in the standings.

The Canadiens got off to a quick start with a Chris Kovac goal just 57 seconds into the game.  Jordan Davis responded for the Kings late in the first period to send the teams to the dressing rooms tied at 1-1.

Davis scored his second of the night early in the second period when a clearing attempt deflected off the referee and to the Kings player.  That would be all the scoring for the night.

Drew Strandberg took the loss despite giving up just two goals.  Ryan Faragher earned the win.

The Canadiens were 0-3 on the powerplay while the Kings were 0-4.

Notes:  The Canadiens played shorthanded in the game with Brad McLean (work) and Jordan Baraniuk (injury); The Canadiens will be without the services of Brendan Willis and Jordan Buckley as they will be away during the March break; The Fort William Hurricanes have clinched first place while the West End Bruins have clinched second place.  The Canadiens can earn third place by gaining one point versus the Norwest Stars on Sunday.  Current River Comets can earn third place by defeating the Volunteer Pool Bearcats and the Canadiens losing to Norwest; The Kings finished the season at 8-6-1 in the Midget 'AA' loop, likely the worst record in the history of the Bantam 'AAA' sqaud;

The first period ended in a 1-1 tie but the Canadiens exploded in the second, scoring four goals.  The first two came just 2:22 apart while the second two came just 1:42 apart.

The Canadiens iced the game in the third with a goal midway through the period to make it 6-2.  Two goals were scored in the last minute to finish the scoring.
