Canadiens respond

Posted by Lincoln Galbraith at Jan 20, 2005 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
After a mediocre first period, where both teams appeared reluctant to put the extra effort in to win, the Canadiens exploded for seven unanswered goals enroute to a 9-3 victory.  The win moves the Canadiens to 8-9-3, two points back of the Current River Comets for third place.  Current River has one game in hand.  The win also moves the Canadiens eight points up on the fifth place Volunteer Pool Bearcats, who also have one game in hand.

Chris Kovac got the offense going when he scored two goals in the opening 27 seconds of the second period, with the goals coming just 17 seconds apart. Justin Backor, Terry Zaroski and Cosimo Racco all scored before the period was seven minutes old.

The Canadiens continued the onslaught early in the third period with Jerry Franzese and Zaroski scoring to make it 7-0.  Norwest responded with three goals in 2:11 to make it 7-3.  Terry Zaroski got his third of the night and 17th of the season and Brandon Hyatt finished the scoring.

At the end of the night, Zaroski finished with five points (3G, 2A), Franzese with four points (1G, 3A), and Kovac (2G, 1A) and Cosimo Racco (1G, 2A) finished with three points.  Both Jerry Franzese and Jordan Baraniuk were +5 on the evening.

Drew Strandberg got the victory while Evan Merkley took the loss.

The Canadiens were 1-5 on the powerplay while Norwest was 0-2.

Notes: The Canadiens played missing Brad McLean; Justin Backor only received the automatic game misconduct for his checking from behind penalty.  No other games will be missed;  The nine goals was the most scored by the Canadiens this season; The record (kept since 2002-2003 season) for most goals in a regular season by a Canadien is 19 (Tyler Haluczak in 2002-2003).  Zaroski (17) and Kovac (14) both moved into second place last night on that list.  Kovac and Zaroski have already exceeded the powerplay goal and game winning goal records for the regular season.  Sean Spenrath moved into a tie for third for assists and is six back of Eric Crupi's record in a regular season; Zaroski's goal total now exceeds his total goals scored last season with the Canadiens, which he did in 36 games.  He has played just 17 games so far this season;  The best offensive season in the past two seasons for a player was put up by both Billy Shewchuk and Tyler Haluczak during the 2002-2003 season.  Shewchuk finished the season with 45 points (18G, 27A) and had a +21 rating.  Haluczak also had 45 points (25G, 20A) and a +10 rating.  Mike Smith, the third member of that line that season, finished with 40 points (21G, 19A) and a +11 rating; The Canadiens team has swung their record around from last season.  Last season finished with just 9 wins in 38 games (9-24-5).  This season, the Canadiens now have 8 wins in 20 games; The Fort William Hurricanes moved into second place last night with their win over the Neebing Hawks; The Canadiens next play against the Bantam 'AAA' Kings on Tuesday January 25th; Six Canadiens will compete in the Thunder Bay Minor Hockey All-star game this evening at 6:00 at Delaney Arena.  Strandberg, Kevin Connolly, Ryan Krasnichuk, Kovac, Spenrath and Backor will all represent the Canadiens.

Canadiens show up to play

Posted by Lincoln Galbraith at Jan 18, 2005 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

After two poor outings, the Fort William Canadiens returned to form and defeated the Fort William Hurricanes 4-2.  The Canadiens have now defeated the Hurricanes twice and tied them once.  The Canadiens are now 7-9-3 while the Hurricanes drop to 9-6-2.

The Canadiens did not get out to a good start.  Rylan Yawney took a puck the length of the ice shorthanded and scored the opening goal for the Hurricanes.  Brandon Hyatt responded for the Canadiens when he deflected a Jordan Baraniuk point shot.  It was Hyatt's first of the season.

The Canadiens scored the only goal of the second period, with Justin Backor scoring his fifth of the year.  The lone assist was credited to Baraniuk.

Terry Zaroski finished a nice three way passing play to make the score 3-1.  It was Zaroski's 14th of the season.  Chris Kovac stretched the lead to 4-1, converting an odd-man rush for his 12th goal of the season.  Michael Maxwell scored a late powerplay marker for the Hurricanes to close out the scoring.

Cody Junttola was solid in net and earned the victory.  Jeff Stokes took the loss.

The Canadiens were 0-7 on the powerplay while the Hurricanes were 1-6.

Notes:  Jesse Friday was ejected with just over 11 minutes remaining in the game for a checking from behind infraction.  He does not have to sit out any further action; The Thunder Bay Minor tournament schedule has been released (available on the schedule page) and the Canadiens open the tournament against the Hurricanes; Backor finished the game with three points while Baraniuk, Kovac and Hyatt all had two points; Jordan Buckley returned to the line-up following his two-game suspension; Backor finished the game +3; Zaroski got his second game winning goal of the season; The Canadiens are now 4-0-3 when leading after the second period but just 1-8-0 when trailing after the second.

Lack of effort costs Canadiens

Posted by Lincoln Galbraith at Jan 11, 2005 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

The Canadiens did not start the 2005 portion of the season as hoped, losing 8-5 to the Neebing Hawks juvenile hockey team.  The Canadiens showed just little spurts of effort during the game and the 13 days off without a game was evident.

The Canadiens, who entered the game with the best team goals against average of Midget 'AA' teams at 3.19 (only team which has a better average is the Bantam Kings at 2.50), did not win the battles in their own zone and the score showed this.

After starting the game with just four defenseman due to the absence of Jordan Buckley (suspension) and Brad McLean (work), the Canadiens lost Jordan Baraniuk six minutes into the game, forcing Jesse Friday to return to the defenseman position.

The line of Mark Dysievick, Willy Coderre, and Justin Molkoski scored six goals and combined for 13 points.  Coderre had four goals while Dysievick had two goals and four assists.

Chris Kovac registered a three goal performance for the Canadiens, giving him five goals in the last three games.  Sean Spenrath added a goal and two assists.

Tyler Fortin earned the win while Cody Junttola was saddled with the loss.

The Canadiens did not have a powerplay during the game while Neebing was 1-2 on the man advantage.

Notes:  The Canadiens are the lowest scoring team in the league at 2.88 goals per game.  West End (4.25) and Neebing (4.21) are the highest scoring teams in the league;  The worst team defense in the league statistically is the Volunteer Pool Bearcats at 4.53 goals against per game.  Norwest and Neebing are second at 4.07; The least penalized team in the league is the Kings at 13.8 minutes per game.  The Canadiens are fifth (of eight) at 21.2.  Current River is the most penalized team at 28.4 minutes per game; The Thunder Bay Minor Tournament at the end of January has only been able to attract one team from outside Thunder Bay (the Dryden Renegades) and therefore will be a six team round-robin.  The Canadiens are guaranteed five games for the tournament, with play expected to begin on the evening of January 27th.

Canadiens shutdown Comets

Posted by Lincoln Galbraith at Dec 29, 2004 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
It has been just over a year since the Canadiens last shutout a team but the Canadiens shutdown the offense of the Current River Comets with a 2-0 win.  The Canadiens last shutout was on December 14, 2003, when Brendan Huntley earned the 2-0 win over the Norwest Stars.  Last night Drew Strandberg earned the shutout.

The Canadiens jumped on the board early, when Chris Kovac beat Jordon George over the shoulder for his seventh goal of the season.  The teams traded powerplay opportunities for the remainder of the first, with both teams forced to kill two penalties each.

The Canadiens were then forced to kill two penalties early in the second period sandwiched around a Current River penalty.  After a minor tussle between Jordan Buckley and Ryan Keeper resulted in fighting majors and game misconducts, the Canadiens again were shorthanded at the end of the second period.

Just 29 seconds after the penalty was over, Terry Zaroski scored his 13th goal of the season when his shot found it's way through the Comets' goaltender.  The Canadiens played a strong defensive third period with Drew Strandberg handling ever shot sent his way.

The Canadiens finished the night 0-4 on the powerplay while the Comets were 0-5.

Notes: This was just the third game all season that the Canadiens had a full line-up dressed for a game; Buckley and Keeper both receive the mandatory two-game suspension for their second fights of the season.  Buckley will not be eligible to play again until January 18 versus the Fort William Hurricanes; The Canadiens now have a 13 day break.  After three practices in the next 10 days, the Canadiens will play Neebing on January 11; For the month of December, the Canadiens finished 2-3-1.  They were outscored 17-15.  The powerplay was 4-32 (12.5%) while the penalty killing was 23-26 (88.5%).  Sean Spenrath led the team in scoring with six points (3G, 3A).  Kovac (2G, 2A), Zaroski (4G), Cosimo Racco (1G, 3A), and Kyler Miron (1G, 3A) all had four points for the month.  The top offensive defenseman for the month was Brendan Willis with three assists.  The top plus/minus for the month were Zaroski (+3), Miron (+2), and Kevin Connolly (+2).  Four players were also even for the month (Justin Backor, Jerry Franzese, Jesse Friday, and Jordan Baraniuk).
