Canadiens lose third to Bearcats

Posted by Lincoln Galbraith at Mar 1, 2005 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

It appears that the Bearcats have the Fort William Canadiens number.  For the third time this season, the Bearcats defeated the Canadiens, this time by a 7-4 margin.  In fact, the last time the Canadiens lost to a midget 'AA' team other than the Bearcats in regular season action was October 19 versus the West End Bruins.  The Canadiens also lost October 12 to the Current River Comets.  Those were the first two games of the season.

Sean Spenrath got the scoring going in the first when he walked in and beat a defenseman and the Bearcat goalie for his 15th of the season.  The Bearcats evened the score by the end of the first despite the Canadiens controlling the flow of the period.

The Bearcats scored two quick goals in similar fashion early in the second.  Both goals by Ryan Beese were scored from the side of the net where he was left alone.  Terry Zaroski (25th of the year) and Justin Backor (13th of the year) evened the scoring before the second period ended.

The Bearcats exploded in the third period, scoring four goals.  Only Spenrath was able to respond for the Canadiens.

Michael Scarcello earned the win while Cody Junttola took the loss.

Both teams were 1-2 on the powerplay.

Notes:  Jordan Baraniuk missed the game due to a hand injury.  He is expected to be out for the next 3-4 weeks; Hayden Johnston played his third game of the season for the Canadiens.  He had one assist; The standing have shuffled themselves out a bit after last nights games.  The Fort William Hurricanes can only be caught by the West End Bruins, having a two point advantage over them.  Both teams have two games remaining against each other.  The Canadiens are three points back of the Bruins and three points up on the Comets; The Midget 'AA' schedule is set-up in a manner that puts the #1 and #2 seeds after 27 games against each other for game #28.  #4 and #5 (Bearcats) also play each other for game #28.  The #3 seed plays a Juvenile team for their game #28.  That Juvenile team is rumoured to be the Norwest squad

In the month of February, the Canadiens went 4-4-0.  The regular season record was 3-1-0 in that period.  The Canadiens started the month with a 4-2 defeat of the West End Bruins and a 6-4 defeat of the Fort William Hurricanes.  After a 6-3 loss to the Neebing Hawks, the Canadiens started a stretch of five games in five days.  The Canadiens defeated the Current River Comets 5-1 and followed that up with a 3-0 win over the Glacier Bears.  The month ended with the Canadiens losing three times in less than 24 hours.  The Canadiens lost to the Geneva Cylcones (3-1), the Tri-Cities Jr. Americans (6-2) and the Glacier Bears (3-0).

In the month, the team scored 24 goals and gave up 25 goals.  The powerplay was 8-51 (15.7%) while the penalty kill was just 17-26 (65.4%).

Offensive leaders for the month were:
Goals - Sean Spenrath (6), Terry Zaroski (3), Justin Backor (3)
Assists - Brandon Hyatt (4), Chris Kovac (3), Cosimo Racco (3), Ryan Krasnichuk (3), Jordan Buckley (3)

Both Drew Strandberg and Cody Junttola were 2-2 for the month.

The Canadiens currently sit in a tie for second place at 27 points, tied with the West End Bruins who have one game in hand.  The Hurricanes are in first with 30 points while the Comets have 24 points with one game in hand on the Canadiens.  The Volunteer Pool Bearcats, despite having their best month of the season, are now officially mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.

In the head to head match-up of games versus other midget 'AA' teams, the Canadiens have the best record in the league at 8-4-3.  The Hurricanes (6-5-3), Comets (5-5-4), Bruins (5-6-4) and Bearcats (4-8-2) follow.

In the head to head match-up of game versus non-midget 'AA' teams, the Hurricanes have the best record at 7-3-1.  The Bruins (6-2-1), Comets (4-4-2), Canadiens (4-6-0) and the Bearcats (3-7-1) follow.

Canadiens clinch playoff spot

Posted by Lincoln Galbraith at Feb 20, 2005 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Despite knowing that they were leaving for a tournament in less than 12 hours, the Fort William Canadiens played a solid game and defeated the Current River Comets 5-1 and clinched a spot in the playoffs.

Current River jumped out to an early start with a Carlton Ylinen goal just 28 seconds into the game.  Kevin Connolly got the Canadiens scoring going with a powerplay goal on a point shot that found it's way past the goaltender.

The second period saw the Canadiens explode.  The Canadiens scored four goals, with three of those goals coming on the powerplay.  Affiliate player Alex Kranyak, playing in place of a ill Justin Backor, scored two of those goals along with singles by Jesse Friday and Jerry Franzese.  Current River's Jared Johnson, after taking 12 minutes in penalties in the first period, took two minor penalties plus a misconduct and game misconduct midway through the second.

The third period saw no scoring.

Drew Strandberg earned the win.  Jordon George took the loss.

The Canadiens were 4-6 on the powerplay while the Comets were 0-1.

Notes: The Bearcats defeated the Bantam Kings in the second game of the evening; Kranyak was the second affiliate to score for the Canadiens this season.  Brad Vis scored one goal in January; the Canadiens took just one minor penalty in the game.

Hawks handle Canadiens

Posted by Lincoln Galbraith at Feb 13, 2005 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
The Fort William Canadiens five-game regular season winning streak ended last night at the hands of the Neebing Hawks.  The Hawks defeated the Canadiens 6-3 on two goals by both Bill Sobkowich and Tyler Haluczak.

Sal Bisignano got the Hawks going early with a goal just 27 seconds into the game.  Sobkowich scored his first of two midway through the period to make it 2-0.  Jesse Friday closed the gap to 2-1 when he banged home a Cosimo Racco pass for his second of the season.

The Canadiens evened the score early in the second period on a Terry Zaroski powerplay goal.  It was Zaroski's 23rd goal of the season.  From their, the Hawks took over the game on the scoreboard.  Kyle Debungie, Haluczak and Sobkowich all scored before the second period ended.  Chris Kovac closed the gap to 5-3 late in the second period on the powerplay.  It was Kovac's 20th of the year.

The third period's lone goal came when Haluczak scored shorthanded.

Jason Humphrey got the win while Cody Junttola took the loss.

The Canadiens were 2-11 on the powerplay while Neebing was 2-3.  The Canadiens took 8 minutes in penalties compared to 44 minutes by the Neebing Hawks.

Notes:  The Fort William Hurricanes defeated the Norwest Stars 1-0 last night.  Brian Sippala scored with just five minutes remaining in the game to move the Hurricanes into first place; The West End Bruins, who were away in Brandon, Manitoba on the weekend remain in second place, one point up on the Canadiens with two games in hand.  The Comets are four points back on the Canadiens with three games in hand.  The Bearcats remain in fifth place, seven points back of the Current River Comets; The Canadiens will mathematically clinch a playoff position with any combination of earning two points or the Bearcats losing two points.  The Canadiens have just four games remaining; The Wednesday night game versus the Comets will likely have a large influence in the battle for third place; The Canadiens have only had two 20-goal scorers in the past two season with Tyler Haluczak (25) and Michael Smith (21) both doing it in the 2002-2003 season.  The Canadiens have two 20-goal scorers this season with Zaroski (23) and Kovac (20).
