The Current River Comets jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and held on for a 3-2 win over the Fort William Canadiens in game one of the best of five semifinals.

Just 2:48 into the game, the Comets’ Nolan Desando scored a powerplay marker to give them the quick lead. After a goal midway through the frame, the Comets’ John Whitfield scored in the final minute for a 3-0 first period lead.

Early in the second period, Connor Larrett dished a past to Noah Power, who sent a pass to Bradley Kaemingh, who netted his 20th of the season to shrink the lead to 3-1.

Late in the third period, Larrett would wrap a goal in for his 31st of the season but the Canadiens were out of time to have any further opportunities to tie the game.

Notes: The Canadiens were 0-3 on the powerplay while the Comets were 0-3; Michael Ahtila and William Seaberg were out of the lineup for the Canadiens; Aiden Gregor played his second game of the season for the Canadiens; In the late game, the Fort William Hurricanes defeated the West End Bruins 4-2; Game two of both series are scheduled on Monday evening.

The Fort William Canadiens and Current River Comets wrapped up the under-18 AA division’s regular season action with a 1-1 draw on Monday evening.

After a scoreless first period, the Canadiens got on the board late in the second period as Connor Larrett’s point shot found it’s way over the Comets’ netminder to give Larrett 30 goals on the season.

Early in the third period, the Comets’ John Whitfield stole a puck in the slot and netted the tying goal.

Jackson Andraka earned the tie in net.

Notes: The Canadiens were 0-2 on the powerplay while the Comets did not have a powerplay opportunity; With Julian Neufeld, Ewan Reid, Joseph Joubert and William Seaberg out of the lineup, affiliates Cohen Adduono and Mason Arthur played. It was Adduono’s second game with the Canadiens and second game of the evening while Arthur made his season debut; This was the first of five consecutive games between these two teams, with the next three to be played will be in the playoffs followed by the opening of the HNO Tournament of Champions; In the early game, the Volunteer Pool Bearcats defeated the West End Bruins.

After the Fort William Canadiens and Fort William Hurricanes played almost half of the game without a goal, the Canadiens scored three times in a 3:16 span and finished with a 4-1 win.

Bradley Kaemingh’s 19th goal of the year, banked into the net, opened the scoring for the Canadiens. Minutes later, Luca Jedruch walked out from the corner and netted a powerplay marker for his fourth of the season. Just 19 seconds later, Michael Ahtila’s point shot found it’s way in giving Ahtila his sixth of the season and a 3-0 lead.

The Hurricanes’ Andrew Romeo scored late in the second period.

Midway through the third period, William Seaberg’s shot was corralled by Connor Larrett, who slid home his 29th of the season.

Nicolas Pavletic picked up his ninth win of the year.

Canadiens fall in semifinal

In a rematch of the previous day’s meeting of the Gopher State Presidents Cup tournament, the West End Bruins were able to drop the Fort William Canadiens 4-2 in the semifinal.

The Bruins’ Brock MacKenzie opened the scoring less than four minutes into the game.

After a scoreless second frame, the Bruins’ Brett Graver scored early in the third period to extend the lead to two goals. Gage Hordy appeared to seal the game with 6:41 remaining but the Canadiens’ Cole Bodnar would score twice in a sixty second span to shrink the lead to 3-2. Bodnar now has 13 goals this season.

The Bruins ended the scoring with an empty netter in the final minute, the second of the game by Hordy.

Notes: The Canadiens were 0-2 on the powerplay and did not receive a penalty in the game; Julian Neufeld and Ewan Reid were out of the Canadiens’ lineup; The Bruins ended up winning the tournament, defeating the Fort William Hurricanes in the finals; The Canadiens and Hurricanes return to action in regular season play on Wednesday evening.

The Fort William Canadiens and West End Bruins met for the 11th time this season, battling to a 1-1 tie in the final round robin game of the Gopher State Presidents Cup tournament.

After a scoreless first period, the Bruins got on the board with a Brock MacKenzie powerplay goal in the latter portion of the second period.

Late in the third period, Neelix Otway’s long shot found a way in past the Bruins’ netminder to even the score. It was Otway’s 11th of the year.

Nicolas Pavletic earned the tie in net.
