The Fort William Canadiens swept the opening day of the Gopher State Presidents Cup tournament, defeating the Los Angeles Jr. Kings 4-1 and dropping the South Florida Golden Wolves 8-2.

In the opener, played on the outdoor rink at St. Louis Park, the Canadiens Bradley Kaemingh scored the lone first period goal, his 18th, tipping a William Seaberg powerplay shot.

After the Jr. Kings tied it 1-1 on a powerplay, Michael Ahtila, his fifth of the season, and Neelix Otway netted second period goals to give the Canadiens a 3-1 lead.

Nathan Greaves scored the lone third period goal to end the scoring.

Nicolas Pavletic picked up the win in net.

In the evening game, the Canadiens scored four times in the first period to take a 4-2 lead. Otway scored his 10th of the year, followed by a pair of goals by Cole Bodnar and a late goal by Connor Larrett. The goals gave Bodnar his 11th and Larrett registered his 28th goal.

Entering the second period up 4-2, Nathan Greaves extended the lead to 6-2 with a pair of goals, his 9th and 10th, followed by Noah Power’s 21st.

Seaberg scored the only goal of the third period to finish the scoring and notch his 4th.

Jackson Andraka earned the win between the pipes.

Notes: The Canadiens were without Julian Neufeld and Ewan Reid for the games; The Canadiens were 3-6 on the powerplay over the two games while the penalty kill erased five of six penalties; As a result of the Saturday games, the Canadiens, Current River Comets and West End Bruins have all clinched semifinal spots on Monday; The Canadiens and Bruins will meet in an outdoor game on Sunday morning before getting the rest of the day off.

Comets blank Canadiens

The Current River Comets scored twice in the opening five minutes of play and eventually had two special teams goals enroute to a 4-0 shutout of the Fort William Canadiens.

Just over two minutes into the game, Ethan Sherwood went top shelf from in tight to open the scoring. Carter Vaillant made it 2-0 just over two minutes later, scoring on a breakaway.

The lone goal of the second period was scored by Liam Duclos, scoring off a faceoff win just seven seconds into a powerplay.

Jonathan Beaucage scored the final goal of the game late in the third period.

Notes: The Canadiens were 0-3 on the powerplay while the Comets were 1-2; Julian Neufeld, Ewan Reid and Jarek Francoeur were out of the lineup for the Canadiens; The Canadiens are now locked into the fourth seed for the playoffs. Games are scheduled for March 1, 6, 8, 22 and 26, with the latter two games only if necessary in the best-of-five series; In the early game, the Fort William Hurricanes defeated the West End Bruins 4-1; The Canadiens head to St. Louis Park for the MyHockeyTournaments Gopher State Presidents Cup event starting Saturday.

Bruins defeat Canadiens

The Fort William Canadiens and West End Bruins wrapped up their regular season matchups on Wednesday evening, with the Bruins scoring three third period goals to pick up a 5-2 win.

The Canadiens got off to a quick start, when Brad Kaemingh set up Connor Larrett at the side of the net for the opening goal just 15 seconds into the game.

Early in the second period, Keewaedin Crews streaked down the left wing and snapped home the Bruins first goal.

Midway through the period, two Bruins’ defenders collided at the blue line and Larrett jumped on the loose puck and netted his 27th of the season.

The Bruins’ Brock MacKenzie scored on a two on one break to even the score late in the middle frame.

The third period was all Bruins, with Kaelen Sherman scoring twice and Chase Macsemchuk scoring a powerplay marker to end the scoring.

Notes: The Canadiens were 0-1 on the powerplay while the Bruins were 1-2; The Canadiens were without Julian Neufeld, William Seaberg and Jarek Francoeur; Aiden Gregor made his Canadiens’ debut; In the late game, the Volunteer Pool Bearcats tied the Fort William Hurricanes; The Canadiens have a week off and play the Current River Comets on Wednesday.

On Wednesday evening, the Fort William Canadiens and Fort William Hurricanes squared with third place on the line and it was the Hurricanes winning 6-2.

The Hurricanes scored twice in the final 84 seconds of the first period, with Andrew Romeo and Anthony Sgambelluri netting goals.

Connor Larrett scored the lone second period goal, finishing a give and go with Noah Power for his 25th goal of the season and cutting the lead in half.

Early in the third period sunk the Canadiens comeback as the Hurricanes scored three times in less than a three minute span. Andrew Romeo scored two of the goals, sandwiching goals around a Fisher Smith marker.

Joseph Joubert scored his ninth of the season midway through the period to reduce the lead to three goals before the Hurricanes’ Michael Romeo ended the scoring in the final minute.

Notes: Both teams were 50% on the powerplay, with the Canadiens finishing 1-2 and the Hurricanes scoring twice on four opportunities; Julian Neufeld and William Seaberg were out of the Canadiens lineup; In the early game, the Current River Comets defeated the Volunteer Pool Bearcats; The Canadiens next game is next Wednesday versus the West End Bruins.

On Monday evening, the Fort William Canadiens and Current River Comets squared off and while the teams combined for nine powerplay opportunities, the Comets scored the lone powerplay goal in a 3-2 win.

The Canadiens jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first period, started when Joseph Joubert fired home his eighth of the year from the slot, followed by a Neelix Otway goal just 20 seconds later. Otway tipped home a Cole Bodnar centering pass after Bodnar blocked a shot in the defensive zone and chased the puck into the Comets’ zone. It was also Otway’s eight goal of the season.

The Comets replied with the lone powerplay goal of the game, as John Whitfield cut the lead to 2-1.

Early in the second period, Morgan Ballon followed up on the loose puck and evened the score at 2-2.

Whitfield converted on a two on one break midway through the second period to give the Comets a 3-2 lead.

After killing a couple of penalties in the second period, the Comets took four consecutive penalties but the Canadiens were unable to find the back of the net and the game ended 3-2 with just over one minute left on the clock.

Notes: The Canadiens finished 0-5 on the powerplay while the Comets were 1-4; The Canadiens were without William Seaberg, lost Michael Ahtila early in the second period and Julian Neufeld early in the third period, finishing with three defenseman; In the early game, the West End Bruins defeated the Fort William Hurricanes 4-3; The Canadiens and Hurricanes meet on Wednesday evening.
