Pair of shootouts in day one of Santa Claus Showdown

Posted by Fort William Canadiens U18 'AA' on Dec 07 2023 at 09:28PM PST

The Fort William Canadiens picked up a shootout win and a shootout loss in the opening day of the Thunder Bay Elks Santa Claus Showdown.

The first game was a low scoring affair, with the Bruins scoring the opening goal late in the first period.

After a scoreless second period, the Canadiens’ Joseph Joubert fired home his 13th of the season to even the score and send the game to a shootout.

In the shootout, Neelix Otway scored on the Canadiens third shot and Connor Menard stopped all five of the Bruins penalty shots to give the Canadiens the 2-1 victory.

Just three hours after the conclusion of the first game, the Canadiens met the Winnipeg East Railcats, falling 4-3 in a second shootout of the day.

The Railcats opened the scoring 3:03 into the game but Owen Bodnar tied the game late in the first period, converting on a two-on-one break with Owen Renn. It was Bodnar’s first of the season.

After the Railcats scored in the opening minute of the second period, the Canadiens responded 29 seconds later with a Neelix Otway goal off a Ewan Reid rebound. The goal was Otway’s fourth of the year.

Similar to the first two periods, the Railcats scored early in the third period and just 1:52 later, Deacon Panacheese sent Nathan Caputo in alone and Caputo snapped home his fourth of the campaign.

In the shootout, the Railcats would score twice and just Otway would score on his opportunity to give the Railcats the victory.

Notes: The Canadiens were 0-2 on the powerplay on the day but were 4-4 on the penalty kill; The Canadiens were without Luca Jedruch for both games, Aiden Gregor for the late game and lost Tallon Thornsteinson in the first period of the seconds game; With three points being award for regulation wins, two points for shootout wins and one point for shootout losses, the Canadiens will finish the round robin with three points. The double knockout portion of the tournament begins Friday afternoon with the Canadiens opponent to be determined still.
