The Fort William Canadiens had a quick start on Wednesday evening but a costly third period resulted in a 6-4 loss to the Volunteer Pool Bearcats.
Tallon Thornsteinson opened the scoring for the Canadiens in the first shift of the game, jumping on a loose puck and finding the back of the net.
Towards the end of the period, Joseph Joubert extended the lead to 2-0.
Early in the second period, the Bearcats’ Maccus Kuokkanen scored after the Canadiens failed to clear the zone.
Thorntsteinson scored his second of the game and fourth of the season, tipping home a Ewan Reid point shot to regain a two goal lead.
Midway through the period, Hudson Gerry took a pass from behind the net and knocked in a powerplay goal to shrink the lead to 3-2.
Late in the second period, Joubert took a Luca Jedruch pass on a two-on-zero break and netted his 12th of the year.
Early in the third period, the Bearcats’ Kuokkanen scored a shorthanded goal followed by a powerplay goal to even the score at 4-4.
With 3:57 left, Kuokkanen scored his fourth of the game on a two-on-one break to give the Bearcats their first lead of the game.
With the clock not on the Canadiens’ side, the Bearcats’ were able to score an empty net goal to finish the scoring at 6-4.
Notes: The Canadiens were 0-3 on the powerplay while the Bearcats were 2-4; In the late game, the West End Bruins scored late to tie the Current River Comets 1-1; Thornsteinson, Jedruch and Reid all finished two points; The Canadiens, Bruins, Comets and Fort William Hurricanes open the Thunder Bay Elks tournament on Thursday.
