Canadiens top Kings; Goegan records hat trick

Posted by Fort William Canadiens U18 'AA' on Nov 11 2019 at 09:53PM PST in 2019-2020

The Fort William Canadiens and Thunder Bay Bantam AAA Kings squared off in the first regular season match-up on Monday evening, with the Canadiens picking up two points in a 6-1 win.

The Canadiens opened the scoring midway through the opening frame when Jaiden Varey’s long stretch pass found Manerplaw Winning behind the Kings’ defense, with Winning burying his seventh of the year.

In the opening minute of the second period, Blake Mayes fired home his first of the campaign to give the Canadiens a two goal lead. The Kings would respond almost instantly with a Owen Voortman goal but it was all Canadiens after that point. First Jordan Anttonen backhanded a shot under the cross bar for his fourth of the year followed by Michael Goegan stealing a puck while shorthanded and finishing to give the Canadiens a 4-1 lead after two periods.

Early in the third period, Goegan snapped home goal and he would eventually finish off the hat trick when Evan Maslack lifted an unsuspecting Kings’ stick and forcing a turnover with Goegan burying his sixth of the year.

Kaylan Campbell grabbed his second victory of the year in net.

Notes: The Canadiens were 0-3 on the powerplay, although two of those powerplay opportunities were only around one minute in length as they were earned while already shorthanded. The Kings were 0-2; Mayes was +5 on the evening while both Maslack and Goegan were +4; The Canadiens were without Kohl Johnson, Michael Sheare and Parker Ball. Affiliate goaltender Johnathon Gammond again dressed for the Canadiens; In other action, the Volunteer Pool Bearcats and Current River Comets tied 3-3 and the Fort William Hurricanes slipped past the West End Bruins 2-1; The Canadiens and Bearcats square off next Monday.
